Advancing Interdisciplinary Research

The future of mobility is increasingly defined by the convergence of transportation, artificial intelligence, robotics, energy systems, communications, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure. As vehicles, infrastructure, and energy systems become more connected, intelligent, automated, and electrified, many of the most important research questions no longer fit neatly within traditional disciplinary boundaries.

The Future Mobility Living Lab (FMLL) was established in 2025 to help address this challenge by creating a collaborative research environment that brings together faculty, students, and researchers from across the University of Georgia. By connecting complementary expertise from multiple disciplines, FMLL supports interdisciplinary research, strengthens educational opportunities, and creates new opportunities for collaboration around the technologies and systems shaping the future of mobility.

As the initiative continues to grow, FMLL also seeks to expand partnerships with industry, government, and other academic institutions while preparing the next generation of mobility leaders.

Building Collective Capability

Future mobility challenges increasingly require expertise that spans multiple domains rather than a single field of study. Advances in connected transportation, artificial intelligence, robotics, electrification, infrastructure, communications, manufacturing, and data science are becoming increasingly interconnected, creating opportunities for collaboration that extend across traditional academic boundaries.

Rather than organizing around a single discipline or research area, FMLL brings together researchers whose work naturally intersects around these emerging challenges. The result is a broader institutional capability that enables new collaborations, encourages interdisciplinary discovery, and supports research with the potential for real-world impact.

Areas of expertise represented across the initiative include:

  • Intelligent Transportation Systems
  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
  • Robotics & Autonomous Systems
  • Energy Systems & Electrified Mobility
  • Connected Infrastructure
  • Data Analytics & Computational Modeling
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Human-Centered Mobility Systems

Faculty & Researchers

The Future Mobility Living Lab brings together faculty from across the University of Georgia who are advancing research related to future mobility. While each researcher maintains a distinct area of expertise, the initiative provides opportunities to connect complementary research, develop interdisciplinary collaborations, and explore new approaches to emerging mobility challenges.

Seminar Series

The Future Mobility Living Lab Seminar Series brings together researchers, students, practitioners, and invited speakers to explore emerging topics shaping the future of mobility. The series creates opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue while connecting the university community with leaders from academia, industry, and government.

Education & Workforce Development

Preparing the future mobility workforce is a core component of the initiative. Through interdisciplinary research experiences, seminars, faculty mentorship, and collaborative projects, students gain exposure to the technologies, systems, and research challenges shaping the future of mobility.

Collaboration

Addressing future mobility challenges will require sustained collaboration among universities, industry, government agencies, and community partners. As FMLL continues to evolve, the initiative seeks to expand interdisciplinary research partnerships, collaborative projects, workforce development, and technology translation that advance both research and practice.

Whether you are interested in collaborative research, student engagement, sponsored research, or exploring new partnership opportunities, FMLL provides a gateway to the University of Georgia’s growing future mobility research community.

If you’d like to collaborate with FMLL, please contact Dr. Qianwen (Cami) Li at [email protected].
